One important responsibility of being a member of the ASA is that we MUST conform to their written code of ethics. As webmaster, it is common to be asked to add or delete an entry on a clients website. In this case Mike asked me to add this logo and signature link below. Well after talking more with Mike and doing my own research on this topic, well... read on as this did not sit well with me. Normally we would NOT enter the political arena however it is felt that this time it is necessary! Did you know (as I did not) that it is legal and highly practiced that automotive manufacturers can withhold important information that is needed to properly repair your vehicle from our local repair facilities whether it be Mike's or elsewhere? I had NO IDEA and when hearing this became infuriated! What happened to allow the Auto Manufacturers to be able to do this? What happened to OUR right to shop around and go where WE feel most comfortable being certain we are getting the most for our money! We have ALL seen the sometimes outrageous repair bills coming from a dealer at some point in our lives. I know I have.
What I did not know is that some of these repairs (I will call "dealer only") should be able to be performed at YOUR trusted local service center usually more quickly and many times less costly! NO LONGER for many items! Our vehicle manufacturers have ensured this by intentionally withholding technical data about the vehicle YOU PAID FOR from our local service centers. That is right, they cannot even attempt to do some repairs today as the manufactures consider this information "Proprietary" and only release it to their dealers. Sounds more like a monopoly than being an honest industry. We are asking along with most of the same service centers you may be using that you visit the website named "Right to Repair Coalition" and sign the petition as legislation is now before Congress to eliminate this practice thus assuring WE as consumers get a fair shake. Do not delay as talks are going on now!
