Should I Be Using Premium Fuel?

Just the word “premium” implies that premium fuel is superior to regular unleaded or unleaded plus. What makes it premium? Does it deliver premium performance? Is it made with superior ingredients? Should you be using it in your car? Mike’s Auto Service & Repair is here to answer your questions so you can understand the difference in regular unleaded and premium fuel and make the choice that is right for you.

What is in Premium Fuel?

Regular unleaded fuel is a byproduct of crude oil which is the most commonly found type of gasoline. Premium fuel’s make up is a little more complex. While premium gas is also made with crude oil, it also contains detergent additives and added hydrocarbons. Detergent additives help keep your engine clean and lower your vehicle’s emissions. The hydrocarbons make premium fuel less combustible than its unleaded counterpart.

Is Less Combustible a Good Thing?

It depends on the type of engine you have under your hood. High-performance engines require a fuel that can withstand a higher amount of pressure without igniting. This is what gives it the power that drivers love so much. Regular unleaded is easier to ignite and requires less pressure which is why it is fine to use for standard engines.

Will Premium Make My Car Run Better?

The short answer is no. While high-performance engines depend on fuel with a higher octane rating, you probably wouldn’t even notice a difference if you put premium fuel in a standard engine. It is important to remember that just because premium fuel is more expensive and is better for some engines doesn’t mean that it is better across the board.

How Do I Know Which One To Choose?

At Mike’s Auto Service & Repair, we always recommend consulting your manual for manufacturer recommendations as well as one of our expert mechanics. Our technicians can make an educated recommendation based on the make and model of your vehicle so you know that you are making the right decision. Remember, while you can always step up to premium, a vehicle that requires a less combustible fuel should never step down to unleaded.
