Your power windows might be slow because your alternator is dying. The alternator not only keeps the battery charged, but it helps power your vehicle’s accessories and components. If you notice a significant difference in the operation of your power seats and windows, as well as your GPS and entertainment system, it may be time to have Mike’s Auto Service & Repair test your alternator to see if it is faulty. Here are other signs you need to replace the alternator.
A Dead Battery
As we just mentioned, the alternator is responsible for keeping the battery charged. While you are driving, your battery discharges. The alternator sends power back into the battery to make sure it doesn’t discharge completely. If the alternator is no longer sending power to the battery, it will discharge completely and die.
Burning Rubber/Wire Smell
You may also smell burning rubber or wires if your alternator motor is going bad. This is an indication that the motor is overheating and the wires and their rubber insulation could be melting. It’s important that you never drive your automobile when something smells hot. You run the risk of starting an engine fire if you continue to operate your vehicle.
Growling/Whining Sounds
Another sign that your alternator is going bad is growling or whining sounds coming from the engine. Again, this has to do with the alternator’s motor. If the motor parts have worn out, it may growl as it tries to generate voltage. The whining sounds have to do with the alternator belt. Whining is an indication that the belt is loose and needs to be tightened.
Hard Starts/Frequent Stalling
Because the alternator powers the battery, you may find it difficult to get your car started if it is going bad. It may take a few cranks to get your automobile going, or, as discussed above, you may not be able to get it started at all.
If you do get it started, your car, truck, or utility vehicle may stall shortly thereafter because the alternator is empowering the spark plugs correctly. If you have been having problems with your engine stalling frequently lately, don’t discount the alternator as the cause.
Problems With the Lights
One sure sign that your vehicle has an electrical problem is problems with the headlights, taillights, and interior lights. You may notice that the lights are dimmer than normal or they may be overly bright. Either way, this points to the alternator or battery.
