Mike’s Auto Service & Repair advises that there are four motor oil types available for cars, trucks, and utility vehicles. The type that is best for your automobile depends on what your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends. For example, if you drive a BMW, the manufacturer recommends that you only use synthetic oil in the engine. Check your owner’s manual to see what is listed as the ideal oil type and weight for your engine. Let’s talk further about the different types of oil below.
Conventional
You can’t go wrong with conventional motor oil. This oil has been around for over a century and it is the most popular oil on the market. Extracted from crude, conventional oil does an excellent job of protecting your engine year-round if you live in an area that does not have extreme weather conditions. It also works well in low-mileage vehicles that have standard engines.
High-Mileage
High-mileage motor oil is conventional oil with additives designed to protect older engines better. This oil is ideal for engines that have 75,000 miles or more on them. Once your engine reaches 75,000 miles, it is more prone to begin leaking oil. High-mileage motor oil is designed to help prevent oil leaks before they start. This oil also does an excellent job of protecting older engines so they last longer. Consider high-mileage motor oil once your odometer reaches 75,000 miles.
Synthetic Blend
If you would like the benefits of synthetic motor oil without the additional expense, you may want to look into putting a synthetic blend in your engine. This oil is a combination of synthetic oil and conventional oil. It offers many of the benefits of synthetic oil yet it doesn’t cost as much because it also has the conventional oil in the mix. Generally, the synthetic blend can go longer between oil changes but not as long as full synthetic oil. This oil is a good choice for those who want the best of both worlds.
Full Synthetic
Finally, as we said above, if you drive a Beemer you need to put synthetic oil in the motor. Other engines that require synthetic oil are high-performance engines and vehicles that operate in extreme weather conditions. For example, here in West Springfield, Massachusetts it’s a good idea to use synthetic oil in the winter to protect your engine better against the freezing conditions. This oil stands up to the cold temperatures without freezing as quickly as conventional oil does.
