What Causes the Chemical Reaction Inside a Car’s Battery?

Lead plates, sulfuric acid, and water cause the chemical reaction inside a vehicle’s battery. This reaction is important because it takes the chemical energy and turns it into electricity. The battery not only helps you start your automobile but also powers many components and accessories. If there is a problem with the chemical reaction inside of the battery, you may have the following issues.

Battery Warning Light

Basically, if the chemical reaction goes bad the battery is bad. Consequently, your vehicle’s engine control module will turn on the battery warning light on the dashboard. This light will stay on until you replace the old battery with a new one. We can do that here at our shop.

Slow/Cranking Engine

You may also have problems getting your car, truck, or utility vehicle started. If the engine cranks slowly and multiple times before it fires up, your battery is getting weak. This is a sign that the chemical reaction is slowing down inside of the old battery. Again, you need a new battery.

Electrical Malfunctions

If the battery is unable to produce enough electricity, you will also have problems with the electrical accessories in your automobile. This includes the vehicle’s lights, the power seats and windows, the navigation and entertainment systems, and even the USB charging ports.

Corroded Connectors

Normally, when the battery gets too old, it starts to leak. When this happens, the sulfuric acid and water leak out of the battery and corrode it. The most common places where you will find corrosion are the battery terminals and the metal connectors on the battery cables.

Sulfuric Acid Odors

If you have a severe battery leak, you may be able to smell the sulfuric acid around the battery. This is an odor that resembles rotten eggs. Unfortunately, there is no way to repair a battery leak. Rather, you need to remove the old battery and replace it with a new one. Again, we can do this for you.

Warped Battery Case

Finally, an old battery can have difficulties with the chemical reaction that is going on inside of it. Consequently, the battery case may start to show signs of an internal problem. These signs include a warped case, a cracked case, or a bubbling case.
