My Vehicle Starts to Shake As it Picks Up Speed

If your vehicle starts to shake when you pick up speed, your wheels are not balanced properly. Mike’s Auto Service & Repair is going to list a series of tire and wheel services below that are designed to ensure that your tires and wheels are always in excellent shape. These services help ensure that you get the guaranteed mileage out of your tires and that your wheel weight is distributed evenly across the axles. It’s important that you take as good care of your tires and wheels as you do the rest of your automobile. Let’s talk more about this below.

Air Pressure Check

Check your tires’ air pressure regularly to make sure that you do not need to add air to any of the tires or to the spare tire. Your tires should always be inflated to the recommended pounds-per-square-inch or psi. Underinflated tires will wear the tire tread down on the tire shoulders. Overinflated tires where the tire tread down in the middle of the tires. This reduces the lifespan of your tires.

Tire Tread Inspection

Also, check your tire tread regularly to make sure that it is wearing down evenly. Signs of uneven tire tread wear include circles, patches, feathers, spots, or scallops of tire tread wear. Wear down either the inner or outer shoulder is also a bad sign. While you are inspecting the tire tread, look for nails, screws, or other objects. Check the sidewalls, too, to make sure they are cracked.

Tire Rotation

The general recommendation for tire rotations is every 6,000 miles. Depending on how much you drive, you may need to have your tires rotated more frequently than that, or you may be able to go as long as 10,000 miles between rotations.

Wheel Balance

Getting the wheels balanced when you have the tires rotated ensures you don’t run into the problem we discussed above. Unbalanced wheels vibrate and make a loud noise as you pick up speed. This is a sign that the wheel weight is not distributed evenly across your vehicle’s axle or axles.

Wheel Alignment

Finally, your wheels also need to be aligned, but you can usually wait two years for the service. If your wheels are not aligned, you will find it difficult to control your automobile.
